Garage doors are one of the favourite points of entry for burglars. That’s because it’s further away from the main part of your house, and that makes it much safer for the thief. Furthermore, other than your car, your garage would often house other valuable and quick-sale items like sports equipment, bikes, and power tools.
Also, if the burglar is intent on entering your home, they can often go through the door from the garage to your home.
So how can you keep your garage and your home safe from these intruders? Here are a few tips:
Update your garage door by making sure it has no loose or broken parts. Better yet, invest in a new garage door that has better safety features than your old one.
If your garage is activated by a remote, never leave that remote inside your car. Thieves can steal it from your car and use it to open your garage door.
Motion detecting security lights are a great way for you to stay safe when you’re near your garage door at night. It can also alert you when an intruder is in your area and inspecting your garage for ways to get in.
Make sure the door leading from the garage to the main part of your home is sturdy and secure. If possible invest in a reinforced door to keep thieves from entering your home and jeopardizing the safety of your family. Also, it’s a good idea to get this door installed with a wide-angle peephole so you won’t have to open the door to investigate any strange noises.
Keep your car safe by demobilizing it when it’s parked. Also, invest in a steering lock so the thief still wouldn’t be able to take your car even if he makes it into your garage.
If you have very important or expensive items in your garage, consider moving them into another part of your home, that’s a little safer. If not, invest in a storage closet that can be locked.
Never leave your garage door open for long periods of time. Even if you’re on the way out and you forgot something, take the time to close the door. You never know when people with bad intentions may be eyeing up what you have in your garage.
