A state trooper’s patrol car was sideswiped late Saturday night by an elderly woman who was driving the wrong way on Interstate 83.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred in Spring Garden Township, York County.
At approximately 11:05 p.m., the trooper was driving northbound in the left lane on I-83 behind a sports utility vehicle. The SUV swerved abruptly into the right lane and that’s when the trooper realized a vehicle was heading straight for him, according to state police.
The trooper tried to pull into the right lane, but the patrol car was hit on the driver’s side.
The 81-year-old woman who hit the police officer’s vehicle was from Red Lion. She stopped her car and cooperated with police. Police said she was uncertain how she ended up on the wrong side of the highway.
The patrol car had minor damage. The woman’s car was moderately damaged and the driver’s airbag deployed.
