Emeritus Professor Wins First Amendment Research Award
Freedom of Religion wins James Madison Prize for Outstanding Research in First Amendment Research.
Stephen Smith, professor emeritus of communication in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Science, received the 2019 James Madison Prize for Outstanding Research in First Amendment Research at the Southern States Communication Association 89th Convention in Montgomery, Alabama, for his new book, Freedom of Religion: Foundational Documents and Historical Arguments.
Smith's book makes an important contribution to First Amendment studies, curating and introducing 300 original documents related to freedom of religion. This text is intended for students and scholars seeking to understand the historical development of contemporary religious freedom issues in the public sphere and is an invaluable resource for First Amendment scholarship by making conveniently available essential primary sources.
