Welcome to our October 2021 newsletter.

Here's what has been happening at Premier Galvanizing, and in the construction/steel industry throughout the last month.

Happy Halloween and have a great November!

Lillies for a late Summer Chelsea Flower Show

It was good to see the Chelsea Flower Show back this year after COVID disruptions - albeit slightly later in the year than normal.

Here is one of the exhibits, titled 'Singing Waterlilly' by Ian Gill Sculpture.

Ian Gill AWCB is an award winning metal sculptor who has been designing and creating contemporary works of art for almost two decades. He studied at Hereford Collage of Art & Design for three years perfecting his knowledge and understanding of blacksmithing, also incorporating wood and stone.

Ian has some of his projects hot dip galvanized at our Hull plant and we were proud to galvanize this sculpture for him.

We hope to see more of your work at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2022 Ian!

RIDBA 2021 - Winners announced

At the end of September, the RIDBA Building Awards - held every two years to celebrate the best in rural and industrial building design and fabrication - took place in Manchester. It was a great event and - as premium sponsors - our parent company (Joseph Ash) was there to watch as the winners were unveiled.

The shortlisted candidates this year were an impressive bunch, and it was exciting to see who would end the night with the awards. The competition was fierce.

Eight prizes were awarded. Find out who the winners were.

Congratulations to everyone who took part!

And the winners are...

Investment in people: Bespoke driver training

Across all our plants, we strive to ensure our employees drive safely and efficiently when collecting and delivering projects to our customers. As part of this process, we provide a fleet of modern and reliable trucks and regular driver training.

Our training efforts have recently received a boost because Simon Keane – Group H&S Transport Manager – has completed several courses with JAUPT, which allow him to train other drivers and write approved driver safety course materials. In addition, classes will be delivered to other colleagues across our plants, helping them increase their driver safety and vocational training.

Hot dip galvanizing FAQs: Why does steel need to be drilled sometimes before hot dip galvanizing?

Hot dip galvanizing is a full immersion process. To facilitate this, all hollow section material requires a free flow of zinc through the whole structure and a means for air to escape. Without the necessary holes, it is not possible to galvanize hollow sections successfully. Additionally, a mitred corner, gusset plate or recess that could pool liquid or trap air, will also require drilling for the same reasons. If pre-treatment chemicals are trapped inside a fabrication, there is a significant risk of explosion when the item is immersed in molten zinc.

For guidance on drilling requirements, please call one of our offices for advice.

The sustainability of galvanized steel

Galvanized steel is an important part of everyday life and plays a key role in the circular economy of Make - Use - Reuse - Remake - Recycle.

'USE' is outlined above. Find out about the remaining stages of the circular economy in our article The sustainability of galvanized steel.
