 2015 Super Tuscans

2015 is being heralded as a super vintage for all Italian wines, and Tuscany’s famed Super Tuscans confirms this statement.   
                                 
Following a mild winter and heavy rains in the spring,  the summer was hot and sunny during the day, with cool breezes at night. The weather was perfect and more consistent than any other recent vintage in history, producing ripe, healthy grapes harvested in September. The Super Tuscans coming into market this year showcase these fantastic growing conditions, which is much needed hype for this particular blend. Last year’s Super Tuscans lost a lot in the market to traditional Sangiovese wine styles, like Brunello and Chianti.

For those needing a quick refresh, the Super Tuscan was born out frustration and experimentation in the 1970’s. Winemakers attempting to cash in on the popularity of Chianti in the 1960s (which was generally of poor quality) would put in the maximum allowed to ramp up profits, causing a drop in quality. This resulted in a decline in both the sales and reputation of the region's wines. The  noble families (ex Antinori) began using French varietals and oak, which was not allowed by the DOC (denominazione di origine controllata), so this experimental wine was labeled as “vino da tavola,” aka table wine.  

In 1968, San Felice released Vigorello, and Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia. An English journalist couldn’t stand the plain classification of “table wine,” so invented the name Super Tuscan.

Since 1992, Super Tuscans have been given their own designation, IGT (indicazione geografica tipica), which allows for experimentation with non-Italian varieties, as long as all the grapes are grown in the area where the wine is made.

In general, this wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, French varietals, and Sangiovese, with delicate, smooth tannins and long aging potential.

2018 is a significant anniversary for Sassicaia, being exactly half a century since its first vintage burst onto the global market. We are thrilled to have them as our featured producer for May 31st's Wine, Dine & Shine dinner! 

According to Tenuta San Guido, this “2015 vintage is very similar to the legendary 1985 vintage” and the growing conditions were perfect for an excellent Sassicaia.
