The 2019 Southeastern Designer Showhouse offered a harmonious blend of masculine and feminine aesthetics

Easy Elegance

Great Room  |  Phoebe Howard

A soaring space boasting a beamed ceiling and a set of statuesque windows surrounded by stone, the great room presents the most robust interior architecture in the house.  To make the room’s size feel less imposing, designer Phoebe Howard visually lowered the height of the walls—and made the space feel cozy—by applying painted wood paneling halfway up three walls, a finish which sets a modern tone and establishes the room’s soft color palette. Large-scale furniture, such as a pair of Formations Olympia cabinets flanking the fireplace, an oversize Gregorious Pineo cocktail table and a custom-designed ottoman, stand up to the room’s height without appearing bulky thanks to their bleached tones. And in an effort to please both sexes, Howard balanced the subtly masculine plaid drapery with a pair of sofas covered in her favorite floral chintz, Cowtan & Tout’s feminine “Rose & Hydrangea” in platinum and teak. —Jennifer Boles

Showstopping Chic

Salon  |  Jonathan Savage

Art and objects are the focus of this high-contrast room, which designer Jonathan Savage has christened “Savage Salon.” The room’s neutral walls and black, cream and gray color palette provide a clean backdrop for a curated selection of art, including Atlanta artist Joseph Guay’s black-and-white photo of a swan and his resin piece, titled “Bullet,” which hangs above the fireplace, as well as the carefully chosen assortment of objects that adhere strictly to the room’s color scheme. Even the furniture has an artistic bent to it, especially the octagonal table by Ironware International, which was designed by Savage and inspired by the work of artist Diego Giacometti, and a black cabinet with mirrored insets by Joanne Westwater. Because this room is intended for reading and napping, sleek-yet-comfortable upholstery—such as the pair of Julian Chichester chairs accented with embroidered flies and generous Zimmer+Rohde custom drapery—instills a layer of softness. —Jennifer Boles

Beauty to Behold

Entry and Foyer  |  Beth Webb and Tristan Harstan

Having chosen the entry and foyer because it is the first and last space one sees when visiting the home, Beth Webb and Tristan Harstan sought to make a lasting impression with an inspired blend of periods and styles. Selecting a pair of gilt-framed wallpaper panels by de Gournay as their starting point, the designers updated the 18th-century chinoiserie-style pattern by having it custom-colored in monochromatic tones, keying them to the burnished hue of de Gournay’s India Tea paper, which was applied to the room’s walls. In sharp contrast to the papers’ delicacy are Iatesta Studio’s Monolith table, Layne upholstered benches and Venetian chandelier, all available through Ainsworth-Noah, which lend the space a contemporary air thanks to their clean lines and sturdy scale. Rounding out the style-spanning mix are a few time-honored accents, including a classic Louis XVI oval-back chair and an Oushak rug from Keivan Woven Arts. —Jennifer Boles

Dining Room  |  Robert Brown

Having decorated his previous Southeastern Designer Showhouse room with a woman in mind, Robert Brown took a different tact for this year’s showhouse, selecting a masculine scheme for the dining room that encompassed the designer’s own stylistic preferences, including his signature color, gray. The star of the space is a custom-designed de Gournay wallpaper, whose very modern design of silk organza cutouts layered against a tarnished silver-leaf background reflects Brown’s fondness for abstract art, which is further demonstrated by two carved wood sculptures by artist Kimo Minton. Known for mixing contemporary furniture with mid-century modern and even an antique or two, Brown paired a Thomas Pheasant for Baker dining table, customized in a piano-black lacquer finish, with two different styles of vintage chairs: a set of circa-1960s Stewart MacDougall Klismos chairs, which have their original leather seats, and a set of ’70s-era Karl Springer chairs upholstered in Ultrasuede. —Jennifer Boles

Kitchen, Breakfast Room and Butler’s Pantry  |  Yvonne McFadden

Inspired by the existing 1920s stone structures found on the property prior to construction, designer Yvonne McFadden—who worked in tandem with the builder on all interior selections and architecture for the Showhouse—knew she wanted to incorporate these elements into the residence’s public spaces to create a link between the property’s past and present. In the kitchen, open shelving placed in front of the stone provides a warm, anchoring backdrop. An oversize island, topped in marble from Pietra Luxury in Stone, features custom steel brackets (a detail borrowed from the butler’s pantry shelving) and offers plenty of storage and counter space for entertaining. In the Butler’s Pantry, stacked handmade tile from Renaissance Tile & Bath create a chic counterpoint to wood shelving, while a mix of open and closed cabinetry by Morgan Creek Cabinetry throughout the open spaces fosters a cohesive, casual-but-refined aesthetic. Completing her vision for a lived-in, luxe look are the breakfast room’s set of antique Spanish chairs, whose patina and ruggedness are the perfect contrast to the strong, modern lines of the Jonathan Browning fixture above.

Screened Porch  |  Tish Mills Kirk

Guided by a Southern fondness for year-round outdoor living, designer Tish Mills Kirk treated the home’s porch as an extension of the adjacent kitchen by furnishing it with both indoor and outdoor pieces to create an alfresco keeping room. Outdoor-friendly furniture sourced from Kolo Collection, including Royal Botania’s Zenhit teak sofa and chairs and a set of jade-colored Cirql chairs by Dedon, are joined by accessories traditionally found indoors, such as a T.D. Frake floor lamp and Mulligan’s two-tier Prairie chandelier from Holland MacRae and Moattar, Ltd.’s overdyed rug, whose emerald tones echo the surrounding trees. Redefining the notion of a screened porch, thanks to a series of motorized, retractable screens, Mills Kirk opted to punctuate the space with Style Library sheers from Grizzel & Mann, which act like walls without blocking views or natural light. The space’s crowning touch is a Brown Jordan firepit, meant to encourage outdoor lounging even on chilly nights.  —Jennifer Boles

Outdoor Oasis

Main Level Terrace | Erin Gates design for Frontgate

From sipping coffee in the morning to hosting festive fêtes in the evening, acclaimed decorator and author Erin Gates knows how to get the most mileage from a space. “The terrace serves a variety of needs, from small gatherings in individual areas to a larger party spanning the entire balcony,” says Gates about designing the multifaceted space. “It’s important to treat outdoor spaces with as much thoughtfulness as indoor ones.” Gates partnered with Frontgate to create the blue-and-white hued paradise that’s equal parts chic and durable, but also lets its hair down, most notably with the Frontgate dining table for eight that transforms into a high-spirited Ping-Pong table. For Gates, the row of Frontgate chaise lounges are the moment she covets. “It’s such a dreamy spot to spend an afternoon in the sun with friends and some chilled white wine. It really just screams ‘me time’—we all need a bit of that.”

Master Bedroom  |  Huff-Dewberry, INC.

Coining their master bedroom scheme “Montecito meets English Manor House,” designers Will Huff and Heather Dewberry married relaxed, California-style living with classic English style. Anglo accents include wheel-back chairs, a George III serpentine server and a bed canopy that is reminiscent of English country house bedrooms but made fresh by its tailored valance and fabric: “Ellsworth,” a custom-designed damask print from Peter Fasano, whose blue-and-white fabrics and striped wallpaper appear throughout the room. Echoing the room’s breezy color palette is the blue-and-white French Aptware, sourced from Heather Cook Antiques and displayed on one wall, while natural elements, such as rattan window shades and a bamboo bed, evoke a California feel according to the designers, who found additional inspiration closer to home. Intrigued by the property’s history as a hunting camp, the duo sought to bolster the room’s connection to the outdoors by adding landscape paintings and an antique wooden stag head to the room. —Jennifer Boles

Master Bathroom  |  Stefan Alexander

While mainstream bathroom designs can look similarly sterile, decorator Stefan Alexander of Peter Block Architects and Stefan Alexander Interiors went against the monotonous grain and crafted a dreamy retreat that’s for living and bathing. “My inspiration was Pauline de Rothschild’s home, Chateau Mouton—I’ve always loved her ability to treat any room, no matter the function, as a fabulous and curated space,” shares Alexander. “Her bathroom could have been the living room … I fell in love with treating a room that’s normally so stark, with warmth and art.” When outfitting the master bathroom, the elegant Nick Burchell’s portrait above the tub and antiques, like the French secretary and mirrors, helped juxtapose the hardworking materials. “The balance of modernity and antiques really help make a wonderful and layered space,” he shares. “After all, a bathroom should be a room where you happen to bathe—so why not decorate it like a living room or private retreat?” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Master Closet  |  Brittany Cason Johnston

You know it’s not going to be your run-of-the-mill master closet when it boasts 14-foot ceilings, unrivaled lake views and a glamorous design by Brittany Cason Johnston of Brittany Cason Interior Design. The elevated dressing room is steeped in luxury by mixing an all-star cast of materials: sculptural furnishings, color palette anchored in cobalt, chartreuse and lavender, metal accents and head-to-toe textures. The runaway star of the space is the handsome dressing table that’s draped in Jim Thompson fabric and Samuel & Sons knot fringe passementerie. “These Regency Modern-inspired details fuse together and create a space that is opulent yet serene and comfortable,” shares Brittany. “As this is a private retreat, items signifying the couple’s personal aesthetic were added, like collected antique perfume bottles, custom monogrammed paper suite by Kat McCall Papers and modern art by Susan Harris Johnston. All combine to comfort, embrace and inspire the owners on a daily basis.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Master Vestibule and Owner’s Veranda | Huff Harrington Design

Interior and fine art authorities Ann Huff and Meg Harrington of Huff Harrington Design want to share a big little secret: Art can (and should!) go everywhere. When they designed the private veranda and vestibule off the master suite, the gallerists embodied the spaces with their signature style of mixing storied antiques, like a silver Louis Philippe mirror and a 19th-century Louis Philippe commode, with elegant upholstery, textiles and—of course—fine art. The elegant combo results in a redefined space that spares the usual tropes of outdoor living. “No wicker here!” jokes the duo. “We loved the concept of upholstery outside (thank you, indoor/outdoor fabrics) along with pieces you might see in an interior living space. Art (like the oils on canvas by Debora Stewart) all add up to a chic, but infinitely usable, room.”—Jeanne Lyons Davis

Main Stair Hall and Main Stair Landings | Sande Beck Design

After previewing the handsome house plans and fine finishes, including a black iron chandelier and sconces, shiplap walls and painted black ceiling, designer Sande Beck was instantly inspired by the warm and inviting palette. “Knowing the stairwell would be used daily and frequently, we envisioned the upstairs landing to be comfortable and pretty, the window landing to be a place to sit and look outside and the main landing to have a spot for keys, trinkets, schoolbooks, etc.” To keep the spaces cohesive, Beck wove the standout peacock blue color throughout the spaces, from the rich Schumacher velvets to the larger-than-life painting by Joseph Adolphe. Art continues its reign up the staircase, where six beautiful paintings by artist Elena Zolotnitsky from Pryor Fine Art hold court. “Our goal was handsome, warm, beautiful and, most of all, inviting. Using an eclectic mix of textures, periods and styles, we tell a story.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Spring Forward

Upstairs Gallery, Office, Laundry, Side Stair Hall  |  Stephanie Jarvis

When it came to connecting the long corridor’s gallery and office, vestibule and laundry room, decorator Stephanie Jarvis had a spring in her step—literally. “The showhouse theme of ‘Spring’ sparked the inspiration. I love that transition between seasons, where the starkness of winter is punctuated by strong bursts of spring color,” shares Jarvis. Her idea came to life first in the stairwell and study, where she incorporated mineral greens, grays and charcoal colors with a punch of citron yellow, including the magnificent tree drawings by Richard Bowers, photographs of decayed architecture by Hector Sanchez and antiques from Atlanta antiques gallery Parc Monceau. The long hall and vestibule embodied springtime with the likes of a butterfly print and coral, green and white colorways. But the tour de force is the vestibule’s attention-grabbing earthy green wallpaper by Faye Bell of Atlanta Artist Collective. “I adore a memorable wallpaper, especially in small spaces,” she shares. “The ink drawings by Russian artist Slava Roubanov were the icing on the cake.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Soothing & Serene

Upstairs Bedroom and Bath  |  Honey Collins

A native Atlantan now living in Boston, Honey Collins saw the showhouse as an opportunity to return to her design roots and pay tribute to her mother and design mentor, the late Atlanta designer Susan Wilcox. Working primarily with Travis & Company and Parc Monceau, Collins furnished an upstairs bedroom and bath with a mix of modern elements and classic pieces. Papered in a Studio E wallcovering that mimics the look of Venetian plaster, the soothing green-and-cream bedroom features a pair of antique fauteuils covered in an abstract-patterned fabric by Porter Teleo, while nearby, a Billy Baldwin Studio Turkish ottoman sports a Jane Shelton animal-print fabric. The canopy bed, dressed in tailored bed hangings and Peacock Alley linens, extends the room’s quietly modern feel, as do the adjoining bathroom’s neutral tones and clean-lined fixtures. Having applied the design skills learned from her mother, Collins believes Wilcox would have loved this room. –Jennifer Boles

Bedroom  |  Tracery Interiors

When scheming the design behind the elegant bedroom, Paige Schnell and her team at Tracery Interiors started with color, specifically a palette mixing rose quartz, black, taupe and, most notably, teal, as seen in the showstopping, oversize upholstered headboard. “The headboard fabric from Romo and accent pillow in Cowtan & Tout really anchored our vision for the room,” shares Schnell. Two rose-quartz chairs by Lee Industries are a favorite by the designer, creating a chic yet cozy corner in the sumptuous space. When designing a lavish retreat, the designer notes that while beauty is pivotal, it also needs to be comfortable. “Splurging on linens (like Peacock Alley, shown here) makes any master bedroom feel luxurious.”—Jeanne Lyons Davis

Southern Comfort

Master Bedroom | Ashley Gilbreath

After an inspiring image of a historic Louisiana bedroom cast a spell over designer Ashley Gilbreath, she had no choice but to create an equally enchanting room that paid homage to the storied space. Gilbreath commissioned an heirloom-inspired, four-poster bed to set the scene. “The bed is masculine in its presence but feminine in the curves,” she shares. “Everything in this room began with this bed.” Gilbreath wanted the space to feel comfortable while garnering a great sense of history, so she sourced one-of-a-kind antiques, like the vintage settee re-covered in emerald green Manuel Canovas velvet and troves of vintage books. The adjoining bathroom carries on the timeless appeal with a chic Schumacher wallpaper. While she notes that all good design should incorporate current fashions, it’s traditional spaces like this one that remain steadfast. “A great space should always have a nod to the past with a small sprinkle of trend. Timeless spaces only get better with age.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Inspired by a Moroccan sunset, decorator Holly Hollingsworth Phillips of The English Room designed this bedroom around a Thibaut wallpaper that’s reminiscent of Morocco’s iconic horizon. As a seasoned traveler herself, Phillips incorporated found objects discovered across the world into the globetrotting space, including ethically sourced zebra ottomans from Africa and bone inlay pieces from India. “I wanted to use items that reflect my personal love of travel,” she shares. “I love unusual items that are a bit exotic and worldly.” The adjoining bathroom’s Thibaut palm wallpaper reminded Phillips of the rooftop of El Fenn luxury hotel in Marrakech—the terracotta exterior, palm trees and scenic sunset. “Both rooms are to reflect the life of the global nomad,” she shares. “But this stop is home.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Ground Floor Powder and Mudroom  |  Jennifer Ferguson

Decorator Jennifer Ferguson of Jacquelynne P. Lanham Designs put the mudroom on the pedestal it deserves with a cool, calm and collected approach to the hardworking space. Custom designed rugs by Eve and Staron and roman shades in dreamy Mark Alexander linen add subtle yet substantial texture to the soothing space. The adjacent ground floor powder room complements the nature-inspired entry with textured Phillip Jeffries wallcovering and a smattering of antique treasures. “I wanted the powder room and mudroom to feel simpatico so I scoured antiques shops (Nicholson Gallery, A. Tyner Antiques, Dixon Rye, Robuck, to name a few) for treasures and artwork,” shares Ferguson. Both spaces’ elegant (and highly functional) designs are rooted by the scenic natural views of the property. “From the material selections by the builder, Southern Gentry Homes, to the beautiful property, there is such a serenity with nature in this home.”  —Jeanne Lyons Davis

Harmonious Blend

DESIGN  |  BUILD  |  LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

A limewashed-brick estate home that overlooks a lake sitting on 5-plus acres in a brand-new three-home community in the heart of Buckhead was the site of the 2019 Southeastern Designer Showhouse.

Designed by Logan Design Group with Y. McFadden LLC and built by Southern Gentry Homes, the property, which boasts historical ties, was brought firmly into the 21st century thanks to a harmonious blend of warm, masculine touches such as natural stone sourced on-site, as well as iron, natural wood and other metals.

Deep roof overhangs lent a Lowcountry feel—and provided generous space for the ultimate indoor-outdoor connections—while extensive landscaping by Joe A. Gayle & Associates and Floralis Garden Design fashioned a fresh narrative of place through mature plantings, curated containers, window boxes and an owners’ garden.
