GREENSBORO, Ala. (AP) - A former Hale County deputy has been indicted on charges accusing him of keeping drugs he acquired during investigations.

District Attorney Michael Jackson announced Thursday that a Hale County grand jury indicted 37-year-old Darrell McGuire on 16 counts of second-degree theft of property. He says Hale County Sheriff Kenneth Ellis got the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to investigate after realizing he had given McGuire money to make drug buys but the purchases hadn't turned up in the evidence room. The indictment says the missing drugs include marijuana, cocaine and crack cocaine.

McGuire is free on $80,000 bond. Court records indicate he does not have an attorney.

McGuire has worked for several police agencies in west Alabama. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison on each count.
