The Arrow Tail Quilt - Tutorial & Quilt-A-Long



 Woohoo, I'm so happy that some folks have let me know that they are looking forward to a tutorial and quilt along for the quilt formerly known as Dillon's Quilt!  You may have noticed that I gave this quilt a real name.  Poor Dillon...I did not want his name forever tied to this design, so I've decided to call it the "Arrow Tail Quilt" since the shapes resemble arrow tails.

:: I have updated and verified to the best of my abilities the supplies for a baby size and twin size quilt.  If you are interested in some other size, I think that it will be fairly obvious how to downsize or upsize this pattern once you get going. 


:: Please note that you will need the entire width of the quarter yard cuts of fabric and fat quarters (in other words, make sure you have nice healthy cuts of fabric!).

:: For the baby size quilt, if you are using directional prints, you will need third yard cuts or fat quarters.   The fabric requirements above assume you will not have more than 4 directional prints in your quilt.  If you have more, your fabric requirements may be higher. 

:: Are you interested in joining the quilt-a-long? This will be a very informal quilt-a-long, so please "join in" at any time.  Since I needed to develop the tutorial, I have already begun my new version of this lovely quilt!  So, I won't be sewing along with you but I'll be here if ya need me! 

:: If you are on flickr, feel free to join my flickr group here - introduce yourself, post photos, ask questions.  I've gone ahead and added some photos of my progress thus far.

    I am in love with this pattern and also you blue/ green/grey color scheme. Are those fabrics from a particular collection? That quilt is perfect for my new baby boy!

    Hi Marissa,

    These fabrics are from a few different collections. The elephants are by Daiwabo (kind of hard to find now). Most of the other prints are from collections by Denyse Schmidt for Joanns. The solids I think are Kona Ash, deep blue (i think) and Essex Linen lime. Hope that helps! : )

    If I wanted to make a king size quilt would I just double the amount of fabric needed for the twin size? I love the pattern. Thanks for sharing!

    This is so lovely. I think I might have to try my hand at quilting again now that I have more patience (and fabric). This looks like something I could tackle and might be a great gift for my mom! Thanks for sharing.

    I just finished this and I am loving it! It is my first try at quilting and is for my oldest daughter and soon her daughter will arrive. I chose to hand quilt it and would love to show you a photo of how it turned out. I made slight modifications...very slight but I do really like it! :-)

    My daughter sent me the picture of the orange colored quilt like this pattern above and begged me to make it for her. Unfortunately I could never find the pattern. Well almost 2 yrs later this quilt and pattern has been traced back to you!! This is wonderful news.. Oh my daughter is 28!! she loves this style. Thanks for sharing this pattern!!

      Hi Madison, it measures approx 40" x 60". Which, I believe is a bit bigger than an average sized crib. Hope that helps!

    Beautiful quilt! Do you know if you would able to make this using fat quarters? If so how many fat quarters would be needed?

      Thank you, Amber! Yes, you can make the quilt with FQs. If you look at the blog post above, under Arrow Tail Quilt Supplies, I list 13 FQs required to make the baby size quilt. For the twin size quilt, I list 14 half yard cuts, so I'd assume you'd need about 28-30 FQs. Hope that helps!

Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about.
