Old Abilene fire station for sale

Want to buy a used fire station? The city of Abilene has one for sale.

The former Abilene Central Fire Station at 140 Mulberry is up for sale.

The city is taking sealed bids for the former Central Fire Station at 140 Mulberry St. through 11 a.m. Feb. 6.

Prospective bidders may tour the building and pick up information on bidding during two open houses — from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and on Jan. 26.

Bids will be opened in the City Council chambers immediately after bidding closes at 11 a.m. Feb. 6. The city reserves the right to reject any or all bids. The City Council will make the final decision on the sale.

The former fire station was built in 1955 and contains about 22,000 square feet, according to information on the Taylor County Central Appraisal District website.

The appraisal district set the property's value at $99,960 for the land and $251,629 for the building for a total of $351,589.

Last year, the council discussed the possibility of selling some properties the city no longer needed.

The Mulberry Street facility has not been used as a fire station since a new Central Fire Station was put into service at 250 Grape St. in September 2001.
