Beer Reclaims Wide Lead As America's Favorite Alcoholic Beverage [Infographic]

This article is more than 7 years old.

Research suggests that the majority of Americans adults, 65 percent, consume alcoholic beverages. After a long and hard work week, do you prefer to kick off the weekend with a cold bottle of beer or a nice glass of red wine? Depending on how your week went, maybe you might even need to drink something harder. The majority of Americans have a thirst for one beverage in particular. According to a recent poll published by Gallup, beer is still the nation's alcoholic beverage of choice.

That wasn't always the case, however. In 2005, wine dethroned beer as the nation's favorite alcoholic beverage, by Gallup's polling, and it drew close again in 2011 and 2013. In the years since, however, beer has recovered strongly. In July 2016, 43 percent of drinkers said they prefer beer compared to 32 percent for wine and 20 percent for liquor. The choice of beverage does depend on gender with half of female drinkers preferring wine with beer and liquor tied as their next most favored beverage, according to Gallup.
