Dangerous travel conditions expected in midstate on Monday

Monday's winter weather advisory is expected to create dangerous travel conditions throughout the midstate.

Snow and ice covered roads are expected to make for a slippery commute in the midstate on Monday.

About 1-2 inches of snow and sleet likely will drop between 4 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The wintry mix will turn to freezing rain in the afternoon and one-tenth of an inch of ice is expected to accumulate before the storm passes, the weather service said.

Drivers should plan for slippery conditions and limited visibility.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation urges residents to stay off roadways if possible during winter storm events.

For motorists who must drive, PennDOT recommends the following travel tips:

  • Wear your seatbelt and reduce speed if conditions warrant it.
  • Ensure battery, lights, emergency flashers and wiper blades work properly.
  • Check and maintain fluids and ensure your gas tank is full before traveling.
  • Ensure tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread.
  • Prepare an emergency kit containing a cellphone, heavy blanket, gloves, salt or sand, flashlight, water and nonperishable food.
  • Use extra caution on bridges and ramps and beware of black ice.
