Lakers Clip Colonials, 4-3, in Season Opener

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's tennis team pened its 2012-13 campaign Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 setback to Mercyhurst at the North Athletic Complex.

The Colonials posted a pair of victories in singles action and earned the doubles point against the Lakers.

In singles play, freshman Marie-Sophie Heine (Wanza, Belgium) earned a victory in her collegiate debut, posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Courtney Thompson at the No. 2 singles flight.

Senior Clarissa Chen (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Winnipeg Secondary) followed Heine with a win at the third singles, producing a 6-0, 6-2 win over Rebecca Haener.

In doubles, Heine teamed up with junior Carolina Mourao-Teixeira (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) to battle for an 8-6 victory over Caroline Bristol and Sarah Baich at the No. 1 flight, while seniors Isabella Novella (Santo Andre, Brazil) and Tiffany Meinert (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Oakland Catholic) helped the Colonials secure the doubles point with an 8-6 win over Taylor Wedlake and Devon Hubbard at No. 3.

Robert Morris returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 18, by hosting Slippery Rock at the North Athletic Complex in a match that will begin at 4:00 p.m.
