Full-Time Technical Writer (Instrumental) (Houston, TX)

Job Description

The Technical Writer is responsible for the development of technical documents.  Also responsible for producing marketing/sales type documentation as requested by project managers in the engineering department. Works closely with R&D personnel to understand the design and functionality of existing products as well as new products under development, and produce product documentation for internal and external users

ESSENTIAL TASKS & DUTIES

  • Works closely with engineers to prepare manuals and revision to manuals from preliminary to final stages by formatting properly, spell-checking, using proper grammar, updating headers and footers, and re-linking where necessary.
  • Completes control sheets, including summary of changes for all manual revisions.
  • Works with the manual templates in Word; linking and formatting documents consistent with the standard engineering manual.
  • For each project requiring soft copies:  creates .pdf files of entire manual, customizes and prints CD labels, and burns CD.
  • For each project requiring hard copies:  sets up binders, copys all manual sections, inserts additional instruction manuals & supplemental documentation, plots, folds and inserts all drawings.
  • Prepares all document transmittals for every item shipped from Engineering.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Respond to change productively and handle other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (B.S.E.) from four-year college or university with two plus years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge & Skills: 

Working knowledge of database, internet, spreadsheet, and word processing software.

Language Skills:

Must possess exceptional writing and editing skills, and be capable of taking a document from initial conceptual development to final production.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
