METHODS TO MANAGE HETEROGENEOUS BIG DATA AND POLYSTORE DATABASES

Co-located with the 2017 IEEE International Conference on Big Data

Introduction:

Enterprises today must provide data management solutions for large, heterogeneous datasets that are often the amalgamation of disparate data exposed through multiple programming models. Developing analytics over such complexity runs head-on into the famous adage that “one size does not fit all”. Traditional database management systems (DBMSs) provide high performance solutions for parts of the data, but it is unlikely that any single engine can provide high performance access to all parts of complex, heterogeneous datasets. New approaches such as polystore databases show promise for addressing heterogeneous datasets; exposing complete functionality of underlying DBMSs with their distinct query notations or languages.

At IEEE Big Data 2016, we organized the first ever workshop on Polystore systems. We brought together experts from around the world and presented novel advances in the field. In the second version of this workshop, we will continue to build a community around polystore systems and other novel techniques for managing and computing over heterogeneous data.

Research topics included in workshop:

  • New Computational Models for Big Data
  • Languages/Models for integrating disparate data such as graphs, arrays, relations
  • Query evaluation and optimization in federated and polystore systems
  • Efficient data movement and scheduling, failures and recovery for polystore analytics
  • High Performance/Parallel Computing Platforms for Big Data
  • Integration of HPC and Big Data platforms
  • Data Acquisition, Integration, Cleaning, and Best Practices
  • Mathematics for Polystore systems
  • Machine learning using complex data management
  • Complex Big Data Applications in Science, Engineering, Medicine, Healthcare, Finance, Business, Transportation, Retailing, Telecommunication, Government and Defense applications
