Delhi Fire Services has decided to take several measures to boost efficiency and they include hiring retired firefighters for a year. This suggestion has come from the Delhi government after getting feedback from the fire department. Increasing the number of training centres and fire stations across the city, and digitisation of the unit are among other measures planned.
“We have decided to hire retired fire officials. Their pay scale will depend on the type of work they will be given,” says Dr G C Misra, Director, Delhi Fire Services. “Our department made a request for inducting staff, and we are expecting new employees in the next few months. The process for induction of fire department staff is very long. Each candidate, when selected, has to undergo a pre-service training which lasts between six and 10 months. This increases the time taken for selection and induction, but now we are planning to give some relaxation,” he adds.

On plans for training, he says, “The Delhi government has allotted land measuring 14.5 acres at Budhanpur Majra village in northwest district for establishment of a fire training institute. This will be set up on the lines of the Fire Service College at London Road, Moreton-in-Marsh.” Talking about digitisation, Misra says with the help of MCDs, building plans will be put online soon.
Moreover, the process of recruitment of 39 station officers, 9 sub officers, 55 radio telephone operators, 803 fire operators has started, according to officials. At present, the department has 59 fire stations including Khera Dabar, Supreme Court and Parliament House Fire Posts and 13 more will be added soon, say officials. The department provides safety cover across an area of about 1,483 sq km. Its resources are also used in emergencies outside the city on demand of the National Disaster Management Authority.
