Body Worn Cameras Now Mandatory For Bailiffs

It was announced today that people in debt will be provided additional protection against rogue bailiffs.

In a move which only affect England and Wales at present, the Government has decided that body worn cameras are now a compulsory item for bailiffs to ensure debt is collected in a safe manner. The government has committed to these mandatory changes due to calls to improve industry standards to protect vulnerable people. Last year, Citizens Advice helped 41,000 people with bailiff issues.

Justice Minister Paul Maynard said:

“The use of intimidation and aggression by some bailiffs is utterly unacceptable, and it is right we do all we can to tackle such behaviour.

“Whilst most bailiffs act above board, body-worn cameras will provide greater security for all involved - not least consumers who are often vulnerable.

“We are looking carefully at other measures to improve the system and will not hesitate to take action where necessary.”

Portable body worn cameras are becoming a more popular solution to capture evidence-ready video and audio footage for criminal prosecution and also deter agression towards staff.
