How to Beat Marijuana Addiction with Marijuana Rehab

One of the primary difficulties with developing a dependence on marijuana is that other people may not recognize it as a problem. The continuing legalization of the drug and the fact that it has medicinal properties causes people to dismiss that it is possible to have an unhealthy relationship with it.

But, cigarettes have a natural source and we accept that addiction to them is terrible. Prescription drugs remain legal and have a medical use and we accept that there are people who cannot use them in moderation. Marijuana is no different.

What you really need when you are suffering from marijuana addiction is assistance from experts. Marijuana rehab centers are staffed by caring professionals who understand substance use disorders. They can help you beat your marijuana addiction in a number of ways. What follows is a discussion of some fairly common components of a marijuana treatment plan.

You should get a better understanding of how marijuana rehab will help you recover from your addiction and it will make you have some questions.

Withdrawals

Marijuana Rehab

Marijuana withdrawal can cause edginess and a bad temper.

Unlike withdrawal from opiates or alcohol, whose withdrawals can kill people, marijuana withdrawals don’t present a life threatening series of symptoms. In fact, for year, people even argued against the presence of withdrawals. However, experts have begun to recognize withdrawals from THC, one of many chemical compounds found in marijuana.

Withdrawal from marijuana or hash begins within 24 hours after your last usage of the drug. The heavier your use is, the more severe your withdrawal symptoms will be. Withdrawal is an important step to acknowledge because they symptoms often make people leave a rehab center and return to using. You can’t beat the addiction if you don’t stay in the center.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) you are likely to experience the following symptoms.

  • Edginess
  • Apprehension
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Bad temper
  • Alterations in appetite

You may experience the following as well, although they are less common side effects of withdrawal.

  • Heavily perspiring
  • Uncontrollable shaking
  • Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Rapid heart rate

A structured marijuana rehab program will ease you through withdrawals in a couple of ways.

Medication

It seems more and more common to treat discomfort with medication. However, as there are no approved drugs for marijuana abstinence, as there are for opiates, your rehab program may not prescribe medication to help you through withdrawal. However, some do dispense symptoms specific medication. Patients with persistent generalized anxiety (common with marijuana withdrawal) may receive Buspirone, for example.

Education

It may seem surprising but another way that rehab programs help you through marijuana withdrawal is with education. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) advises rehab centers to educate patients on their withdrawals and on other aspects of their treatment as an incentive for engagement and recovery.

SAMHSA states: “Providing information concerning withdrawal symptoms may reduce discomfort and the likelihood the individual will leave detoxification prematurely.” Education also helps patients beat marijuana addiction in general because it helps them stay focused on treatment, answer questions, gives them control over the process, and quiets fears.

Therapy

Your marijuana addiction treatment will include therapy, and it will likely be both group and individual. Initially, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, you will initially attend the therapy daily and for more than one session. After this period comes to an end, you will attend less frequently and for fewer hours as you prepare to return to your life outside of the treatment center.

You may find yourself in one of the following types of therapy:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: acknowledge behaviors that contribute to marijuana abuse and learn how to correct them
  • Contingency management: receive items as inspiration to abstain from marijuana use
  • Motivational interviewing: diminish ambivalence by intensifying motivation
  • Multidimensional family therapy: improve the dynamic of your family

One of the biggest boons of time in a rehab center is that it takes you away from environmental triggers and stresses that can begin a period of relapse. This lets you focus on your education and your therapy and any other treatments you participate in.

The cravings will continue and you will have habitual longings to use marijuana but the safety of inpatient rehab will help you to fight these urges.
