LANSING, MI — Michiganders can begin electronically filing their 2012 income tax returns on Jan 22.

But before you install your tax software program, head to your accountant's office or fill out forms the old-fashioned way, you might want to brush up on some of the changes to Michigan's income tax rules.

Tax experts Michael Bozimowski and Evan Kaploe will answer your questions in a live chat from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. today on MLive.com.

A massive tax overhaul package signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder in 2011 impacts retirement income and many different credits, such as those for homestead property tax, certain charitable donations or for low- and medium-income families.

“You really do need to gain an understanding, talk to your tax preparer, get a feel for what’s going on early,” said Bozimowski, director of state and local tax services for Rehmann, an accounting, tax and financial planning firm with 12 locations in Michigan.

Bozimowski, who works out of Rehmann's Farmington Hills office, has worked in public accounting since 1980 and specializes in state and local taxes, merger and acquisitions, settlement negotiations, as well as business and strategic planning.

“The law has changed. It’s now a fact of life we have to deal with,” he said. “Communication and preparation, not just of the return, but of the impact, is going to be key on an individual basis.”

Evan Kaploe, a tax specialist at Varnum Law’s Novi office, will also be on hand to answer questions.
