Maybe he just needed a vacation?

A missing dog named Rascal returned home to Kansas Saturday after someone found him 1,500 miles away — in California.

The 13-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix vanished over Thanksgiving weekend from the Lewis’ home in Oswego, Kan. By mid-December, the Lewis family was thinking about giving up hope.

“After not hearing from anyone for more than a month, we thought we would never see Rascal again,” the dog’s owner, Nikki Lewis, told 10News.

The well-traveled pooch, still wearing his collar and dog tag, turned up at an animal shelter in San Diego on New Year’s Eve.

Authorities believe someone picked up Rascal in Kansas and drove him all the way to San Diego.

Shelter employees were able to get in touch with the Lewises to give them the good news for the new year.

An animal charity, the Foundation for the Care of Indigent Animals, paid for Rascal’s plane ticket back home.

“The kids are excited,” Nikki’s husband, Ty Lewis, told KWCH-12. “They had no idea Rascal was coming back.
