INSIGHTS

  • 40,500 Available Job Openings, but fewer than a year ago. 40,500 Available Job Postings during November 2017, or 1,700 less compared to November 2016. Office and Administrative Support Occupations, Sales and Related Occupations, Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Food Preparation and Serving Related Occupations, Transportation and Material Moving Occupations and Management Occupations saw a decline of 200 or more year-to-year Available Job Postings.

  • The Education, Training and Library Occupations, Business and Financial Operations, Architecture and Engineering Occupations, Life, Physical, and Social Science Occupations and Community and Social Services Occupations had an increase of 100 or more postings year-to-year.

  • While the Available Job Postings in November 2017 is above 40,000, similar to November 2016 and November 2015, the volume of New Job Postings was at its lowest in November 2017, compared to the same period from 2013 to 2016. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.6% or 29,300 unemployed in October 2017, signifying an increasingly tight labor market.

  • Demand for Tech talent remains high. Seven of the Top 20 occupations are tech-related. Registered Nurses is the top posted occupation for November 2017 and also saw the largest year-to-year increase in postings, followed by Teacher Assistants.

  • More jobs ahead. Companies recently announced new location or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 745 plus jobs. The list includes TrendKite, Tiff's Treats, Opcity, OnlineMedEd, NSS Labs, Lonestar Tangible Assets, Irby Construction, Forte Medical, EverlyWell, Dynamic Manufacturing, ClearDATA and Alsco Linen.

There were approximately 40,500 Available Job Postings during the November 2017 monthly reporting period, a decrease of about 1,700 Available Job Postings compared to November 2016. About 6,900 or 17 percent of the Available Job Postings during the November reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations. 44 percent or 17,600 are New Job Postings.

The Major Occupational Groups that saw the largest increases in the volume of Available Job Postings compared to November 2016 are Education, Training and Library Occupations, Business and Financial Operations, Architecture and Engineering Occupations, Life, Physical, and Social Science Occupations and Community and Social Services Occupations.

Office and Administrative Support Occupations, Sales and Related Occupations, Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Food Preparation and Serving Related Occupations, Transportation and Material Moving Occupations and Management Occupations saw a decline of 200 or more year-to-year Available Job Postings.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 2.6% or 29,300 unemployed in October 2017. This represents an decrease of 3,900 unemployed compared to September 2017 which had a 2.9% unemployment rate or 33,200 unemployed. Approximately 63% of unemployment insurance (UI) claimants that are actively seeking a job in Travis County have less than an associate's degree, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area.

Note: The data for November 2017 would be the sum of all posted ads from October 14, 2017 to November 13, 2017. This reference period is aligned to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) unemployment job search time period to provide a more accurate comparison of labor supply and labor demand.

The Austin MSA saw more than 40,000 Available Job Postings in November 2015, November 2016 and November 2017. However, in terms of New Job Postings, there were only 17,600 in November 2017, the lowest compared to the same time period from 2013 through 2016.

Registered Nurses, Teacher Assistants, Retail Salespersons, Social and Human Service Assistants and Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses all saw a 70 or more increase in year-to-year postings. Customer Service Representatives, Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Demonstrators and Product Promoters, Medical Secretaries, Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers, Hand, Web Developers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, Computer Programmers and Sales Managers had a 120 or more decrease in year-to-year postings.

Almost half of the Top 20 occupations posted require less than an associate's degree as the typical education needed for entry. All but two, Retail Salesperson and Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, posted an annual median wage of $30,000 or more in the Austin MSA.

Approximately slightly more than 50 percent of all Available Job Postings require an Associate's degree or more as the entry level of educational qualification needed for the posted occupation, while 25 percent require a high school diploma or equivalent.

Computer and Information Research Scientists saw the largest year-to-year increase in Available Jobs Postings, followed by Software Developers, Applications and Information Security Analysts.

Network and Computer Systems Administrators, Web Developers and Computer Programmers saw the largest decline in year-to-year Available Job Postings.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell MSA, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA, Boston-Cambridge-Newton MSA, Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington MSA and the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood MSA have a higher hiring difficulty in this occupational category when compared to the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA.
