Lenovo users ought to be aware that its Software Updater was found to be vulnerable, and it's recommending it's removed from the machines.

I have a machine here that's most likely got that on it, so i'm off to remove it as soon as i've hit submit on this message.

Lenovo has waved the white flag on a vulnerable component of its pre-installed software updater and recommends that users uninstall it from more than 110 notebook and desktop models running Windows 10. Lenovo Tells Its Users to Remove its Vulnerable Updater [threatpost.com]

The bloatware that PC manufacturers add to their machines these days doesn't seem to be thought out beyond the potential extra ad revenue they might garner. My standard steps when setting up a new machine has always been to wipe the existing system and start over with a clean install of the operating system.

Microsoft knows that the extra bloatware is an impediment to the machines' operation and that's why they put out their signature series and Surface machines. That's Windows without any of the extra junk. You can get nearly the same result by installing from scratch yourself, but that may be beyond the skill set of many.

The extra add on has kept many of the hardware mfgrs afloat in the last 25 years, but that bloat is coming home to roost.

Family members don't like to tell me they bought a new computer.

I am there, demanding a hug, kiss, and a beer, and get out of my way to pristine their "new" computer. :) (It's not quite that bad, but close!)

I have received no notification for my Lenovo Laptop. Then again I craftily removed everything except the bare bones Win 8 Pro [later Win 10} as the first priority.
