The mission of the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network is to develop everyday leaders who engage differences as strengths to improve their campuses, workplaces, and communities. November 2012

A Guide to Keeping the Peace this Thanksgiving

Dialogue over TurkeyThe Thanksgiving after a divisive national election can be a tricky one. Our team believes YOU might be just what any friendsgiving or family gathering needs. If conversations get challenging for your circle, try these tips:

  1. Ask the hosts to support you in leading a mini-dialogue using SDCN's guide. Remind them that political spats could lead to cranberry sauce on the carpet. If they protest that dialogue is just too cheesy, remind them that several dishes could be criticized for the same.
  2. Place a set of prompts on each plate setting, as if each question were a type of delicious food. When people begin to remove them, tell them in your strangest voice that togetherness IS nourishment.
  3. Find ways in advance to connect your circle with volunteering and donation efforts. This may bring out the best in even the unlikeliest of characters.
Check out www.sdcampusnetwork.org/thanksgiving for SDCN's guide for bringing dialogue home. Post highlights from your dialogue on our Facebook page. Thank you for your commitment to this everyday work!

Students in Mexico and at Duke Learn to Lead Dialogue

Dialogue in Mexico
Monterrey, Mexico:  130 students and administrators at Mexico’s University Tecnológico de Monterrey (Tec) dove into SD in mid-October. Led by Amy and Deirdre Combs (Montana State University Leadership Professor), the participants learned a different way of approaching people and problems, and are enthusiastic to apply it.

One participant wrote, “This was ‘radical.’ I have never felt like this or communicated like this, and I see the power and the difference it makes. Immediately. I’m in Student Government and I can’t wait to use [SD skills] in my leadership roles.”

We are eager to see how the students adapt SD for their community and are excited to have a large team from Tec attend the Annual Conference in March at Harvard. For more reflections on the experience and outcomes in Mexico, read our news article or Deirdre’s blog post.

Duke University:  Eighteen first year students in a Leadership and Civic Engagement seminar course learned effective communication with Amy Lazarus, SDCN Executive Director. Students are applying their new skills and perspectives to their Civic Engagement Enhancement projects.

Host a Red-Blue Dialogue in Your Community

Chris Howard's Electoral MapWhile it feels as if the nation has been split into red and blue states, the nation is actually purple.

Use SDCN's Guide to Hosting a Red-Blue Dialogue to talk about the values behind voting choices. Dialogue could be exactly what your school, faith institution, or family needs.

Congratulations to Patricia M. Lampkin and William B. Quandt, 2012 Thomas Jefferson Award Recipients

Two outstanding members of both the U.Va. and SD communities, Pat Lampkin and Bill Quandt, have received the highest honor bestowed by the University for their achievements in service and scholarship. Pat Lampkin has been the patroness of SD since its beginning on campus, over ten years ago. Bill Quandt has worked extensively with the international work of IISD, attending Camp David, and has provided much support for the campus chapter. We congratulate and thank both of them for their continued commitment towards creating inclusive communities! Learn more.
