The alliance will offer clients a range of engineering, safety and environmental services.

Atkins said that the group can provide US nuclear clients with a team of over 1,200 professionals with nuclear sector experience for single-source delivery of projects from the initial business case through licensing-permitting, engineering and construction management.

The alliance is targetting the existing fleet of operating reactors, together with nuclear fuel cycle facilities to offer services in support of asset management, life extensions, and regulatory compliance. In addition, the team will work in the nuclear new build programme.

“This alliance builds on the existing relationships between Merrick and Atkins and between Merrick and NSA. We have always worked well with these companies and successfully delivered over 20 projects in the Federal sector in the last 10 years through our JV with Atkins,” said John Buckle, Merrick’s vice president nuclear services and technology. “Our capabilities fit extremely well with our partners’ talents.”

Atkins director Nigel Thornton said: “Our team offers nuclear operators and owners a unique ability to benefit from the application of best practice and lessons learned from both the US and UK nuclear sectors to provide intelligent and innovative solutions.”

Robert Frost, president and CEO of Nuclear Safety Associates, added: “We are already working successfully with Merrick on a number of high profile nuclear projects and I am very excited by the prospect of broadening our teaming to include a global player such as Atkins. I am confident that this teaming arrangement will add substantial value to our clients by offering a much broader range of services, with the benefit of reducing their supply chain management and interfaces.”
