With more than one in three households in New Jersey involved in a landlord-tenant relationship, the state’s judiciary is bracing for a wave of eviction litigation.

Gov. Phil Murphy’s eviction moratorium, which had been in place since March 2020, was officially lifted for certain individuals based on income on Aug. 31. It was a deadline the New Jersey judiciary had been anticipating, and now judges and court staff are moving forward on plans to deal with an expected crush of new landlord-tenant cases.
