Pascagoula Walmart to join stores nationwide in Thanksgiving Day strike (updated)

PASCAGOULA, Mississippi -- Pascagoula's Walmart Supercenter is joining hundreds of other Walmart stores in staging strikes to shine a light on low pay and other complaints, according to the Corporate Action Network website.

The watchdog group, OURWalmart and Making Change at Wal-Mart are encouraging strikes across the country and are asking for the retail giant to stop retaliating against employees who speak out for fair pay, affordable health care and other issues.

The CAN website said Tuesday that the Pascagoula Walmart is staging a strike, which is scheduled for Thanksgiving night at 8.

Employees and residents can RSVP to the event by clicking here.

"Stand with Walmart workers in their fight for their rights," the website says. "For decades, Walmart Stores Inc. have dragged down wages, forcing their workers to work irregular schedules, and intimidated and took retribution on any workers who fought back."

A strike has not been organized at the Ocean Springs Walmart, but the location is listed on the website with link for a volunteer leader to "adopt the event."

Kory Lundberg, Walmart's director of national media relations, said Tuesday that the protests involve only a handful of associates at a handful of stores.

"In fact, most of the protesters don't even work for Walmart," he said in an e-mail. "They are union organizers and union members who work somewhere else."

Most of the company's 1.3 million employees "are excited about Black Friday and are ready to serve our customers," he said.

Lundberg said the company is "laser focused on serving customers" during the Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales.

"Our stores will be operating normally on Black Friday, and our customers will see nothing unusual when they shop," he said. "This is the Super Bowl for retailers, and we're ready."
