A New England–Style Home That Breaks with Tradition
Photo: Peter Margonelli1/11Architects Arthur Hanlon and Jose Goncalves of Shope Reno Wharton collaborated with designers Michael Cox and Mary Foley of New York design firm Foley & Cox on an 11,000-square-foot home for a family of five in Osterville, Massachusetts. The house is set on an inlet and provides water views from every room.
Photo: Peter Margonelli2/11Cox and Foley combined vintage and contemporary pieces in the great room, using a soft palette to allow the views and artwork to take center stage. Woven lounge chairs by John Himmel from John Rosselli & Assoc. and a Christian Liaigre sofa surround a cocktail table by KGBL Limited. The painting is by James Nares, and the floor lamp is by Isamu Noguchi.
Photo: Peter Margonelli3/11“The open-plan dining and living room was definitely very much in the spirit of the house,” says Foley. “The idea was that it wasn't this formal, separate dining room. It was a more useful, casual approach.” A Roll & Hill light hangs above a table by Mecox Gardens and chairs by Foley & Cox Home; the painting is by Alex Katz.
Photo: Peter Margonelli4/11“The kitchen has the perfect layout for cooking and still allows plenty of room for everyone to hang out and talk,” says the wife. A mod chandelier by Remains Lighting adds a contemporary twist to the bright space, which is outfitted with a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Caesarstone countertops, and an oven, range, and hood by Wolf.

Photo: Peter Margonelli5/11The patio off the kitchen was furnished with an RH cocktail table and sectional sofas by Williams-Sonoma Home with cushions in a Sunbrella fabric. “We imagined that being a major space for everyone to hang out together and kind of flow in and out of the kitchen area before and after meals,” says Foley.
Photo: Peter Margonelli6/11The designers used a soft, monochromatic palette in the master suite. “A bedroom should be an oasis and a restful place,” says Cox. “We added hints of color in the window treatments as a link to their sitting room beyond.” The Holly Hunt bed was paired with mirrored nightstands by Made Goods; the bench is by Peruvian Touch, the desk is by Dennis Miller, and the chair is by Foley & Cox Home.

Throw pillows add color and pattern to the custom sofa by Peruvian Touch and chair by Foley & Cox Home; the cocktail table is by Fontana Arte, and the rug is by Merida.

Photo: Peter Margonelli10/11A son’s bedroom is anchored by a leather platform bed by RH. “He’s off in college now, and I think he wanted it to be a little more masculine and a little more grown-up,” says Cox. The pendant light is by Ralph Lauren Home, the bench is from One Kings Lane, and the rug is by Stark Carpet.

Photo: Peter Margonelli11/11The designers added touches of color and pattern to the daughter’s bedroom, which features Noguchi lanterns, John Robshaw bedding, and a lounge chair by Maxwell Blake. Each of the teenagers’ bedrooms was designed to also serve as a guest room. “We tried to balance out giving each room individual personality but also making them gracious enough that they would be comfortable as a shared space,” says Cox.
