Why Are Swimming Pools Cold When It's Warm Out

The sun, the warmth, it all screams pool weather, but unless the pool is heated, the water will feel ice cold this time of the year. If you're wondering why that's the case, keep on reading!

Water temperatures are slow to heat up, and just as slow to cool down. Water is very "stubborn" to change temperature. It takes 4 times the energy to heat up water than to heat air.

Water also "feels" colder because water is a more efficent medium than air to cool our body down. A 65 degree afternoon is refreshing, but you can get hypothermia in a few hours of swimming in 65 degree water!

The average afternoon temperature this week is generally in the 60s so you can expect that your pool water temperature won't be much above 70 this time of the year. That's why it's not quite swimming weather for most of us yet (Unless you visit our natural springs which are fed underground with 70 degree water all year long!).
