Biggest bummer in a while was the news that ex-Wilco multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett passed away – he was a major part of two of my favorite records from the past 10 years, Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and obviously a freakishly talented musician. I interviewed Jay in 2002, right after he was booted from Wilco and he seemed like a gent, despite how he might’ve come across in the I Am Trying To Break Your Heart documentary. So here’s a little tribute to the guy, from what may well turn out to be Wilco’s peak – the fall 2000 tour in support of Summerteeth and the Mermaid Avenue albums. What we’ve got here is a Wilco that’s less arty and precious than the Wilco of today – they’re more like the best classic rock band you’ve ever heard. And by classic rock, I’m talking about a thread that runs from Bob Dylan and the Band through the Rolling Stones through Neil Young/Crazy Horse through Gram Parsons through Big Star through the Replacements. Bennett is all over this recording, playing sparkling lead guitar and keyboards and singing a ton of backing vocals. At this point, it sounds like as much his band as Jeff Tweedy’s, which is probably one of the reasons Tweedy decided he couldn’t work with him anymore. But while their collaboration lasted, it was something special. This recording, from Toad’s Place in New Haven, is also the first show I’ve featured on this blog that I actually attended. Dulcie, Evan and I made the drive from Poughkeepsie – sadly, the heat in the club almost made Dulcie faint, so we weren’t able to be up in front. But maybe Evan was – maybe you can hear him in the crowd?
