Celebrate fire prevention week with Anderson Fire Protection!

Did you know that October 8th-October 14th is fire prevention week? During this week, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) will be on a mission to educate the public about fundamental, yet ultimately essential elements of fire prevention! This years theme is: “Every Second Counts, Plan Two Ways Out.

In A Fire, Every Single Second Truly Counts

Ultimately, seconds can mean the difference between residents of our communities escaping from a fire safely or having their lives end in tragedy! In fact, that is why focusing on having two different ways out is so crucial. Reinforcing why everyone needs to have a safe and secure fire escape plan is a great reminder for people to actually prioritize fire safety as an essential component of their day-to-day lives.

Create A Map Of Your Home

Many people are curious about the best way to create an evacuation plan for their families. Traditionally, the first step is to draw a grid of your home. Ideally, you want to include everyone that lives in the household to participate in creating your fire evacuation plan. Doing this activity together is not only a bonding experience but could be the one thing that saves everyone’s lives. The next step is to mark the two exit routes from your home to the outside. Creating a clear path from each room of your home to the outside is the only way to ensure that everyone stays safe in the event a fire breaks out.

Practice Makes Perfect

Having an evacuation is all well and good but only becomes useful if everyone remembers it. In fact, conducting practice fire drills in your home, just like children do in school can be the best way to have everyone in the household know the plan like the back of their hands. All it takes it a twice-yearly practice drill for all members of the family to thoroughly understand the evacuation plan without difficulty. Ideally, you’ll want to conduct one fire drill at night and one during the day. This way, no matter what time of day a fire breaks out, you and your family know where to go and what to do.
