The 2017 Sony World Photography Awards

The Sony World Photography Awards is an annual competition hosted by the World Photography Organization. The Award has four competitions which competitors may enter after successfully submitting their images into any of the four available categories. This year’s contest attracted a total of 227,596 entries from 183 countries. And the organization has just hinted on its shortlist of winners for 2017.

The overall winners are scheduled to be announced on April 20th. However, the organizers have been kind enough to share some of their shortlisted and commended images with the public, each image was extensively captioned by its photographer. The Sony Photography Awards’ four competitions include the following;

  1. PROFESSIONAL: – 10 categories that will be judged on a body of work.
  2. OPEN: – 10 categories, rewarding the best single images. National Awards – Entries submitted to the Open competition are automatically entered into the National Awards based on nationality. It is important to check and verify if your individual country is participating.
  3. YOUTH: – for all photographers aged 12-19, a single image responding to one brief.
  4. STUDENT FOCUS: – for those studying photography.

A complete celebration of photography is set to be brought to London from the 21st of April to the 7th of May. There, The Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr – 2017 Exhibition will showcase the winning, shortlisted, and commended images from the world’s leading photography competition.

Additionally, it will present a unique selection of images, books, and films from legendary photographer Martin Parr. A variety of different genres from Architecture, Daily life, Documentary, Landscape, Portraiture, Sports, Street Photography, Wildlife and much more will be enjoyed as well. For anyone who wants to have a perfect time out with the family, the event is a must.

The Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr – 2017 Exhibition will hold at the prestigious Somerset House, London, where the winning, shortlisted and commended images from the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards will be showcased. All through the time of the 2017 exhibition, a series of events and talks with Martin Parr and other industry experts covering a broad range of subjects and discussions will be held.

One of such discussions, as will be presented by Legendary British photographer Martin Parr, will be about his ground-breaking career, spanning more than 40 years and often focusing on themes of leisure, consumption, and communication.
