The chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, David Probert, has been appointed chairman of the World Association of Eye Hospitals (WAEH), where he will lead the association for the next two years.
The announcement was made during the WAEH 11th annual meeting, which was held 14 June at the Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital in China. Mr Probert replaces former chief operating officer at the Singapore National Eye Centre, Charity Wai.
Since joining Moorfields in April 2016, Mr Probert has successfully led the trust in gaining a rating of ‘Good’ from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and secured accreditation for a further five years as a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre and Clinical Research Facility.
Prior to joining Moorfields he was former director of strategic development at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) and brings 18 years’ experience in healthcare management to the new position.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Probert said: “The WAEH is an invaluable forum to work together and share knowledge. I am looking forward to leading the association to ensure that it continues to promote collaboration in ophthalmology to improve care and outcomes for people with sight loss around the world.”
According to WAEH, former chairman, Charity Wai, was “instrumental” in growing the organisation’s membership from its eight founding member hospitals to the 40 eye hospitals that are members today.
