Is art going to the dogs? According to the organizers of dOGUMENTA (I) NYC, the answer is an emphatic yes. Just in time for the dog days of summer, Brookfield Place in FiDi is mounting an art exhibition tailored for canine connoisseurs from August 11 to August 13. The work in the show will be hung at a low viewing height appropriate for man’s best friend, while the objects themselves will be relegated to the color spectrum that dogs can see (combinations of yellow and blues, but not reds or greens). Also hours for the show (which begins at 8am and ends at 8pm) include a closure from 1–4pm to “‘paws' at midday to avoid the heat!”

The show is the brainchild of Jessica Dawson, the former art critic for the Washington Post, who moved to NYC in 2013. She’s known in the art world for visiting Chelsea art galleries accompanied by Rocky, her Maltese/Yorkshire terrier mix (a rescue from a Soho dog shelter). From there, the idea of a show for dogs seemed only natural.
dOGUMENTA’s name is a tongue-in-cheek adaptation of dOCUMENTA, the famed international art festival that takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany (this year’s edition also featured a branch in Athens, Greece). dOGUMENTA, on the other hand, dispenses with the cost of a trip to Europe, and not only that, it’s free.
