about

"Marilyn Monroe" is my first release in 2 years. It’s a bit of a departure from my sound on “Slow Horses” with more upbeat bass lines and drums reminiscent of the 80’s. Rob Davidson and I wrote the entire song in a couple of hours one evening. It features a saxophone solo from Rubber Duc’s Sheldon Sham and the gospel back-up vocals of Kananelo Rantso and Lebo Moalusi.

The song is all about how people get pressured in life to live a certain way and to do things at certain times. Everyone these days lives life according to the same plan and schedule, right from when you should get married, when you should have kids, where you should live and the type of job you should have. It’s mostly about friends and family pressuring a man to get married and his statement to the world that he’ll do things in his own time. It talks about how love and life are easy without the pressures of the outside world. How if you could run away, you wouldn’t have to change anything and everything would work out just fine. It brings to life the age-old story of running away to Vegas to marry someone in a typical shotgun wedding…

lyrics

I remember the look on your face
I remember the promises we made

Can we head back to Vegas? I won't love you any less
Take photos with the fountains and the wind under your dress
I don't need no book or preacher to tell me how I feel
How about I dress like Elvis, you be Marilyn Monroe

I remember the wind in your hair
I remember a world without care

Can we head back to Vegas? I won't love you any less
Take photos with the fountains and the wind under your dress
I don't need no book or preacher to tell me how I feel
How about I dress like Elvis, you be Marilyn Monroe

If it were just you and me, I'd carve our names in a tree
And we'd move on with our lives
If it were just you and I, I'd write our names in the sky
And put an arrow through that heart
Through my heart

Can we head back to Vegas? I won't love you any less
Take photos with the fountains and the wind under your dress
I don't need no book or preacher to tell me how I feel
How about I dress like Elvis, you be Marilyn Monroe

Can we head back to Vegas? I won't love you any less
Take photos with the fountains and the wind under your dress
I don't need no book or preacher to tell me how I feel
How about I dress like Elvis, you be Marilyn Monroe
