Blog Tour & Giveaway: Half-Blood Descendant (Half-Bloods #1) by Natasha S. Brown

Book Blurb:

Shifters live in secret. They’re not the only ones.

USA TODAY bestselling author Natasha Brown blends urban fantasy, paranormal romance and supernatural suspense in the Half-Bloods, an adventure for lovers of shifters, vampires... and more.

Jax never stays anywhere long enough to put down roots. He’s a shapeshifter—the only one of his kind, or so he thinks. While prowling on his landlady’s property, he is stunned to find a man feeding on her neck. Although he frightens away the blood-sucker, Jax leaves behind a paralyzed woman and a trail of blood in his wake.

Aerilyn teaches high school and doubles as a guardian for the Genus Society, an ancient underground shifter organization. After learning of a cougar attack in her own mountain neighborhood, she suspects a rogue shifter is to blame.

When the Society accuses Jax of the “animal attack,” he is ordered to stick around until he can clear his name. Desperate to regain his freedom, he must put his trust in his beautiful guardian. Their forbidden attraction leads Aerilyn to wonder if the blue-eyed drifter is innocent. And if he is, the Society has an even bigger problem on its hands—one that feeds on blood.

Aerilyn pulled off her jacket and set it on the ground. Next, she slipped off her shoes and unbuttoned her jeans. A cold breeze whistled through the valley, raising goosebumps on her arms as she pulled her V-neck off. She held the fabric to her chest and hunched away from the wind.

When it died down, she dropped her shirt onto her growing pile of clothes. She rested her hand against one of the aspens to brace herself while she took off her socks and happened to glance back at her companion. Jax was down to his underwear, standing in the moonlight. Dark lines adorned his back, forming what appeared to be an intricate tattoo, one she couldn’t see well enough from her vantage point. She could, however, see how muscular he was. As he tugged at the waistband of his boxers, she blushed and looked away, reminding herself he would be gone as soon as her father allowed him to leave town.

She didn’t waste any time removing the last of her clothing and stood among the pale aspen trunks, calling to the energy at her core. It surged through her pores, chasing away all visible marking of her humanity until none was left. Aerilyn took a deep breath and stepped out from behind the trees.

My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Mystery, Romance, Supernatural, Suspense, Vampires, Werewolves--

Jax has always been a loner, an outcast, living a nomadic life from place to place but he enjoys his current life, living in his trailer on his boss's property and working on cars. But one night when he was out in his animal shape he interferes in a man biting his boss, an act that will change his life forever. Aerilyn is desperate to hold on to her independence and help as many new shifters with the change as she can, but she never expected her newest charge to be an adult that she is attracted to. When Jax and Aerilyn are thrown together it seems like fate and danger keep getting in the way.

I was first drawn to the book because the cover caught my eye, it had bright colors and both characters on the cover had attitude that I appreciated. When I found out that the book was about shifters, it then became an insta-read because you know me and my love of all things shifter related! I am so happy to report that this was such a fantastic read! I really enjoyed how Natasha was able to mix her world of supernatural things, mystery, action/suspense and romance. Oh, and the supernatural component to the book was unique and I always appreciate a a new a approach to both the were myth and other bitey creatures. There was a little bit of all the things I love so wonderfully developed with a fast paced plot and great, well developed characters.

The story was narrated by both Jax and Aerilyn, which just so happens to be my favorite way to read a romance novel (which this was not per se, but romance did play a role in the story for motivational purposes) from both parties point of view so I don't feel like I am missing anything. I was a big fan of Jax and his sad heart and lonely ways since we first met- you could tell he was a little bit damaged, shy, but had a big heart of gold. His relationship with KT was so sweet, his honesty even in the face of distrust, and the fact he overcame his personal demons made him easy to root for. It took me longer to warm up to Aerilyn, she had a little less personality and seemed slightly generic at the beginning but once her backbone was made present I ended up liking her.

Side note, can I pretty please have a story about Emery? She was a fantastic character, so vivacious and spunky, but at the same time a mystery that I would love to know more about. Actually, almost all the side characters in the book deserve their own stories, they were so well fleshed out in the short interactions they were in I was intrigued and interested.

This was my first read by Natasha and I was so in love! I really liked how easy this was to read, I sunk in the pages effortlessly right from the first moment I was inside Jax's head. I can't wait to read more books in the Half-Bloods series and more from Natasha in general. I highly recommend this to any Urban Fantasy lovers out there and any one who just wants a fun read.

I read a complimentary copy of this title.

  1. It's funny you should ask about Emery... I just finished writing Half-Blood Secrets, which involves Deane and a new character named Verity. BUT I'm plotting Emery's book now, Half-Blood Origins. I can't wait to get started. She's become a favorite character. I'm so happy you enjoyed HBD, and I truly appreciate the review :-)
