Travel back in time as you travel to the beach. On Saturday, you can ride a vintage 1920s subway car out to Rockaway Beach—the trains, vintage D-type Triplex and BMT Standard cars, leave from the New York Transit Museum at 116th Street at 10am, and you can get tickets here. Retro bathing suits are only necessary if you’re Taylor Swift.
The throwback trains originally ran from 1916 to 1969, and they replaced the even older wooden cars. They’re decorated with retro seats and ads, along with old-school ceiling fans, but those are literally no sweat if you’re already used to commuting from the hottest subway stations.
Return buses leave the Rockaways at 3pm, but you can stay later for shopping, drinking and eating. There’s also a free screening of The Force Awakens that night if you want to continue your day from a long time ago.
