At Burton Law Firm, we pride ourselves on our ability to offer exceptional client care. A large part of our ability to have such a high level of client care is because of our outstanding paralegals.

Your paralegal will have a large role in your case, so we feel it’s important to be familiar with them from day one. Just knowing there is a friendly and familiar face there to assist you can be comforting when you are going through a complex family law issue.

Why Do I Need a Paralegal?

A paralegal is beneficial to your case in several ways. One is simply because they are more accessible. Our attorneys are often out of the office do to court appearances, and other case related needs. Having a paralegal that’s familiar with your case means there’s someone available to address your concerns.

Our attorneys meet with their support staff on a daily basis so your team can stay up to date on your case and discuss any concerns or questions you may have. Paralegals can often answer your questions so you aren’t forced to wait until your attorney becomes available. Sometimes you may just need a listening ear. It’s not uncommon for clients to feel a connection with their paralegal after working with them throughout their case.

A paralegal has the ability to draft documents. Under the guidance of your attorney, our paralegals draft a significant portion of correspondence and even court documents on your case. Although documents are reviewed by one of our attorneys prior to being filed, paralegals often draft the substance of the document, saving you time and money.

Paralegals are also responsible for case organization, document management, and scheduling. Think of a paralegal similarly to a nurse. They can bandage up the small wounds, but when it comes to discussing surgery or major procedures, your attorney will be there to discuss and strategize with you.

Appreciating Paralegals

A paralegal is there to assist you through what is probably one of the most difficult and emotional situations of your life. But she isn’t just helping you. She has a whole group of clients she is assisting through the emotional warfare of family law. At the end of the day, she is doing the best she can at her job, so try to understand that.

Coming unglued on your paralegal is simply not acceptable. Often times your paralegal is simply the messenger. You may be receiving bad news from an attorney, the court, or another party, but as the old saying goes, don’t shoot the messenger. If you have a legitimate concern about how your case is handled or your paralegal, contact the office manager to discuss it, but don’t unload on your paralegal.

The paralegal field is a thankless job. Our paralegals work day in and day out to assist clients and aid in moving cases forward. It’s an emotionally and mentally draining job. Our paralegals take a personal interest in cases and really do care about our clients.

When is the last time you thanked your paralegal for being friendly, prompt, or knowledgeable? If it’s been awhile, reach out and thank them today!

Our Paralegals Love What They Do

I enjoy helping clients find peace in their lives, and take the stress of worrying about deadlines, procedure, daily issues, and tasks off of their shoulders, so they can enjoy life and time with their family. As a child of divorce, I can relate and empathize with clients, as I’ve been in that situation and know what a divorce is like from a child’s perspective. Once a client’s case is final, it’s a great feeling to know that I’ve been able to be a part of that resolution, so the client can move on with their life in the best possible way. -Monica Short

I like helping client’s and assisting attorneys throughout cases. I feel I have an opportunity to really help and support someone that is facing difficult obstacles. It’s rewarding to know that clients trust me for some of the most important things in their lives. No two cases are the same, and I love a challenge, so I enjoy the opportunity of continuing to learn new things. -Janeth Alvarado

I find it rewarding working side by side with attorneys to assist them in progressing cases in a timely and efficient manner. It’s rewarding knowing a lot of the “behind the scene” work done by paralegals can significantly move cases forward. I like helping people in difficult situations to find comfort and hope throughout the litigation process. -Misty Toon
