For many years, surgical procedures were the only way to remove this unwanted fat from the submental region. Now there are alternatives to invasive surgical liposuction to remove unwanted fat FOREVER.
As you may recall, recently we introduced Kybella an FDA injectable that minimizes submental fat (double chin) with two-six injectable treatments. Kybella is an injectable medication used to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat in this region. Deoxycholic acid (Kybella) is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down fat. Injecting Deoxycholic acid or Kybella causes the fat cells to be destroyed; the body then excretes these fat cells naturally providing a more sculpted area. Prior to the injection, the patient undergoes a topical numbing process and then will receive multiple small injections under the chin, the exact number of injections depending on the amount of fat that is under the chin and the patient’s desired outcome. Injections of Kybella are limited to the medial chin area, to eliminate the injury of vulnerable anatomic structures. Each Kybella treatment session is given at least one month apart, with up to six treatments may be required to achieve the desired outcome. Results will be noticed within six weeks of the initial injection. Treatment time itself is approximately twenty-thirty minutes per treatment session. There are only minimal side effects associated with Kybella injections, some of which include: bruising, pain, numbness, redness, swelling and areas of hardness at the injection site. These symptoms may last up to two weeks or more and resolve on their own. While we have found this procedure to be successful for most patients here at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, there is a small percentage that have had limited to minimal correction.
In addition to the Kybella injections for the reduction of submental fat, Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery is now able to offer CoolSculpting to this area, yet another noninvasive procedure! This technology has been proven to eliminate fat cells up to twenty-five percent with each treatment. CoolSculpting is also an FDA cleared device to treat the “double chin” region (CoolSculpting also can treat nine other sites). Cryolipolysis is the proven science behind the CoolSculpting procedure, this involves the idea that cold can target fat cells without damaging skin and surrounding tissue. With CoolSculpting fat cells are frozen and then die FOREVER. Over time (1-3 months) the body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells, again leaving a more sculpted treatment area. There is no down time, restrictions or pain associated with the CoolSculpting procedure. There may be minimal bruising at the treatment site which resolves on its own in just a few days. The procedure itself takes forty-five min to one hour and thirty minutes.
Here at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, we have found that these procedures work well alone or synergistically. Initially Kybella can be injected in the central area of submental fullness then CoolSculpting can be performed on the lateral bulge of the chin bilaterally.
