Why this petition matters

Started by Brian Laughlan

"The Domain Name Server (DNS) is the Achilles heel of the Web. The important thing is that it's managed responsibly." - Tim Berners-Lee

This is a petition to the ICANN President and CEO, Mr Fadi Chehadé. We, the undersigned, are concerned about domain name parking abuse and request that ICANN revisit the Anti-Cyberssquatting Consumer Protection Act and the Trademark Cyberpiracy Prevention Act to ensure a much fairer policy is put in place in regards to ownership of domain names.

There must be clear rules to govern ownership that do not allow domain names to be parked for countless years, doing nothing, and then asked to be sold at a price tag which is quite frankly on the borders of extortion.

We request that ‘Cybersquatting’ issues be discussed, reviewed and that you work closely with the World Intellectual Property Organization to create simple boundaries that address these issues. We understand that you cannot simply take ownership away from people, but surely laws can be set in place to challenge any owner over inappropriate acquisition of domain names that do not have any direct connection to their business, product or legitimate personal use. There is no clear channel to go through to make a complaint.

This is just one issue from many that needs to be resolved for a better world wide web, but taking action now against it, leads the way for real change. The internet is the most powerful tool mankind has ever created, it allows one voice to sway millions, connects people all over the globe, drives businesses into new horizons never seen before and someone must stand up now to protect it.
