AN AER LINGUS flight from Frankfurt to Dublin was delayed overnight due to a thunderstorm.

The airline confirmed that 122 passengers due to travel on flight EI657 at 8.45pm yesterday had to spend last night in the German city.

A number of people took to Aer Lingus’ Facebook page to complain about the situation, saying it resulted in people missing weddings and other events due to take place today. Others claimed there was no food available while they had to wait.

One passenger told TheJournal.ie the time of the rescheduled flight was pushed back several times before leaving shortly after 3pm today.

A spokesperson for Aer Lingus said a thunderstorm forced Frankfurt Airport to temporarily close, leading to a backlog of flights. They said the airline arranged hotel accommodation for all passengers.

“Aer Lingus flight EI657 began taxiing to the runway but while taxiing was notified that the airport was now closing due to the night flying ban.

“This meant the flight could not depart and the aircraft, guests and crew were required to overnight at Frankfurt. A large number of other airlines’ flights were similarly affected. The 122 guests were accommodated in hotels overnight and were flown to Dublin this afternoon.”

One passenger said he had to pay for a taxi to get to a hotel about 45 minutes away from the airport. The spokesperson said the airline is ”happy to reimburse the taxi costs and apologise for the inconvenience”.
