Restoring Success:
Getting to the Root of the Problem
By Lisa Lavender COO Restoration Technical Institute

Restoration companies have lots of moving parts. At any time, a problem can reveal itself in many different forms: an unsatisfied customer, an equipment failure, a loss of efficiency, or loss of money. These are just a few of the everyday problems you may encounter. Restoration professionals by our very nature are problem solvers; however, we can soar to a new level if we become root cause problem solvers.
Problems are opportunities to improve when approached in a deliberate manner, employing root cause analysis. For restoration companies, problems generally have two levels to fix:
1. Fix the immediate issue. i.e. make the customer happy or get the equipment working.
2. Solve the root cause(s) of the problem

Some things are invented by "Accident".

Did you know that Silly-Putty, Play-Doh, Dyanamite, The Microwave, Super Glue, Velcro, and many other items were invented by accident? Well... This idea came to me by accident. If you know me, you will know that I like gismos that can help us do our job better. We were preparing for our annual open house here and we had someone come in to decorate the building with balloons. I saw the decorator placing the balloons up on the ceiling without ever getting on a ladder. It was done with magnets and a special pole. The person said decorating large gymnasiums 30 feet in the air without the use of a ladder is a breeze. First thing that came to mind was "Containment". I immediately grabbed some 6 mil poly and hung a large section in minutes. Within five minutes I was on the Click-Click website ordering materials. Lay flat ductwork can easily be hung on the ceiling as well. No strings attached. I encourage you to check out the click-click website and watch the video on their home page. This was invented for the decorating industry. Safe, Simple, Professional, for the Restoration Industry.
