A new study has revealed which areas of the country are most security-conscious based on their spending habits.

The research by home security retailer, safe.co.uk, found that homeowners in Leicester are the biggest spenders when it comes to home security devices, seeing a rise in yearly sales by 86 per cent.

Preston and Liverpool came in second and third for the sales of home security products per capita. Brighton is at the further end of the list, with homeowners buying less than one piece of kit per 1,000 people.

Overall, the UK has seen a 12 per cent increase in national average spending on security technology such as CCTV, alarms and locks since last year.

Using national sales data, Safe.co.uk has created this map of 20 cities in order of their home security spending habits…

Surprisingly, the figures don’t reflect the rate of burglary in these areas, as some cities were found to be buying less home security despite high burglary rates, such as Manchester and Leeds.

‘It’s true that burglaries increase in the winter months, but the arrival of lighter evenings shouldn’t mean we drop our defences,’ Anthony Neary, managing director of safe.co.uk said.

‘What’s worrying from our study is that some of the cities we looked at have high burglary rates, yet sales of security products are low or even decreasing year on year in those areas.

‘Investing in home security drastically reduces our chances of becoming a victim of crime so we can’t stress its importance enough.’
