You Can Skate Along A 2 Km Frozen Canal Just Outside Of Toronto This Winter

I only have one memory of Peterborough, which includes the typical “dance mom” vibe of travelling across the province to watch my sister perform in hip hop competitions. An easy-to-tell small city, the quietness and community of Peterborough was pretty admirable and a nice escape from the decent hustle of downtown Hamilton, but if you think that means there isn’t something to do in the city - well . . .

During the midst of the winter season, Peterborough hosts free public skating on the frozen Trent Canal, a lock on the Trent-Severn Waterway. While most of us have to find small frozen ponds for good ole outdoors skating, this 43-metre long rink is every Canadian’s dream.

Although not as long and popular as the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, this smaller-sized rink is the perfect opportunity to waste the freezing temperatures and winds. And if you want to get even more Canadian, consider bringing some Tim Horton’s coffee and hockey sticks - get in that Great North spirit!

Open since January 2nd, the conditions of the canal are monitored regularly by the city. If not safe, you’ll see a red flag flying. If good to go, then a green flag is shown. You know, the basics.
