Variety and the French luxury group Kering are partnering at the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival for a series of talks about women in the film industry and their depictions on screen.
The Women in Motion series will include insight and commentary from notable leading actresses Jodie Foster, Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Chloe Sevigny, and Salma Hayek as well as executive director of the Sundance Institute, Keri Putnam, with producer Celine Rattray and UTA agent Rena Ronson.
In addition, a special panel on the newly formed We Do It Together female-focused production company will take place Sunday, May 15, with actress Juliette Binoche, producer Marianne Slot, director Patricia Riggen and the founder of We Do It Together, Chiara Tilesi.
The series will kick off May 12 with a one-hour conversation with Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster, who directed George Clooney and Julia Roberts starrer “Money Monster,” which screens at the festival.
Each talk will be moderated by a Variety editor and conclude with an audience Q&A. The one-hour discussions will aim to help find solutions for the lack of female representation in the film industry as well as highlight those individuals who have championed female driven narratives and directors.
Variety’s co-editor in chief Claudia Eller noted, “Teaming with global luxury leader Kering on such an important topic as the underrepresentation of women in the film industry provides Variety with yet another opportunity to shine a spotlight on this injustice.”
The goal of the Women in Motion program is to promote openness and diversity on and off the silver screen and shift the perceptions of womanhood.
Each Women in Motion talk will air on Variety.com, WWD.com and on Kering’s digital platform.
