Protests Thursday against power cuts

Recent power cuts in Cairo and other governorates have prompted demonstrations on Thursday, as well as widespread threats not to pay electricity bills.

In Sohag, residents blocked the roads and attempted to storm the department of electricity before being halted by army and police forces.

Meanwhile residents in Cairo’s Shubra district reported that shops were ransacked during nighttime power cuts.

Minister of Electricity Hassan Younis held several meetings to address the issue and declared a state of emergency, especially in peak times.

“Our policy is to rationalize consumption,” he said.
