What are Inclinometer and Tilt Sensor?

Inclinometer and tilt sensors are commonly used in various applications. They are used to measure the tilting position with reference to gravity. They are used to enable the detection of an object’s inclination or orientation. In planes, for example, a tilt sensor helps pinpoint the current orientation of the plane in reference to its angle of inclination with the ground providing the pilot with essential data for controlling the aeroplane.

What are the Specifications of Tilt Sensors?

The function of a tilt sensor is affected by many factors. Some of these factors are gravity, temperature, calibration of the tilt sensor, linearity, and cross-axis sensitivity. Here are the key specifications of a tilt sensor:

• Noise tolerance. Noise can cause distortions in the function of the sensor. This results in reduced system efficiency and output variation.
• Vibration. Like noise, vibrations can also disrupt the functionality of a tilt sensor. Vibration resistance measures are required to prevent this.
• Resolution. This pertains to the minimum inclination detected by a sensor.
• Sensitivity. This refers to the sensor’s ability to react to small changes.
• Measuring range. Each sensor has a maximum range of measurement. Some can cover a range of up to 160 degrees.
