Heathrow Expansion Could Support Thousands Of Jobs - Report

New research has revealed thousands of jobs would be supported by approving a third runway to be built at Heathrow.

A study by WPI Economics states up to 2,700 roles would be supported by the expansion, as well as securing 700 jobs in the steel industry.

Heathrow said the project would be "the first step" in helping to create a "stronger and fairer economy" for Britain following the UK's decision to leave the European Union.


If approved, it is estimated the expansion would result in £56 billion more growth and 100,000 more jobs outside of London and the south than Gatwick.

WPI Economics Director Matthew Oakley said: "The overall economic impact of expanding Heathrow over the lifespan of the project is well documented, but importance of the early stages should not be underestimated.

"Building confidence, supporting up to 2,700 high-skilled jobs in the first 2-3 years, and laying the groundwork for larger construction job gains at a later date are all crucial, especially in the aftermath of the vote to leave the European Union. Fast-tracking infrastructure decisions, such as Heathrow expansion, must be part of the Government's new industrial strategy."
