Emotional intelligence might be underrated and yet it is the best indicator of potential leaders.
The link between highly successful business leaders and Emotional Intelligence is backed by a raft of studies over the past 10 years or more. It is not just having, what used to be referred to as “soft skills”. It is much, much more.
People with a high EQ are able to understand and influence their own emotions as well as the emotions of others. As a result they can build and nurture sound business relationships that are conducive to good business and achieving results, with and through others. They can adapt with the changing business environment and have the self-confidence and resilience to weather the inevitable storms.

1. Have a realistic self-image They understand their own emotions, motives, and objectives. They have high self-aware and know their strengths and weaknesses. They do not under estimate themselves, are proud of their achievements and have confidence in their abilities. At the same time, they are real about the areas they could develop more and are committed to self-improvement.
2. Are good communicators Being able to express themselves clearly, concisely and with heart are indicators of high EQ.
Poor communication is one of the roots of confusion and misunderstanding in the workplace.
Making sure everyone understand what’s being said, what is expected from them and what the future plans are ensures time is not wasted on clarifying messages. Good communicators connect with people, and through their words and actions lead by example.
3. Have self-control They are good at influencing their mood and emotions. As a leader it is imperative that your emotional reactions do not demoralize or demotivate your team. Showing a calm and professional exterior gives your team reassurance and belief that they can come through difficulties. The ability to manage those reactions shows maturity and strength, which are expected by your team.
4. Can motivate themselves and others In the current business climate, organisations have limited resources while still trying to grow and develop. This can lead to frustration, stress and overwhelm. Emotionally intelligent people are able to motivate themselves and find ways to work within their current limitations. They have the ability to help others understand how they impact overall organizational purpose and can motivate them to contribute at their highest level.
5. Have empathy Not to be confused with sympathy, people with high EQ have empathy. They can understand the emotions and point of views of others. They accept different opinions even if they disagree.
They are great listeners who strive to understand others, rather than listen to reply. This helps them to gain greater insight into organizational blockages, understand what motivates people and develop richer, more productive relationships at work.
Emotional intelligence can be developed and grown over time by self-awareness, continuous practice and behavioural change. Improvement in any of the areas above will have a significant impact on your work performance and has been shown to impact the financial results of companies.
