Mike Condon will leave future deal in the hands of his agent

Mike Condon is worried about the present and not the future.

But the Senators goaltender told Postmedia before he returned to the club’s net Thursday night against the Dallas Stars that, despite being an unrestricted free agent on July 1, he’d be happy to stay with Ottawa.

Though the Senators have had very preliminary contract discussions with his Buffalo-based agent Michael Wulkan, Condon isn’t going to spend time worrying about what the future might hold.

The duo had dinner when the Senators were in Buffalo last Friday and Condon made it clear he doesn’t want a play-by-play of discussions. He trusts if there are serious talks between Wulkan and Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion that Condon will get involved when there’s something he needs to accept or reject should the opportunity presents itself.

“I told (Wulkan) I didn’t want to hear anything unless there was something tangible or something significant,” said Condon, who’s in the final year of a deal that pays him $575,000. “I’ve got a pretty good relationship with my guy. I’ve known him since college.

“I just told him I don’t like hearing rumours or scuttlebutt. That’s just a distraction and I just want to worry about the on-ice product right now. If something comes along that (Wulkan) thinks is worth hearing, then I’ll listen to it and take his advice. That’s why I pay him to handle all that stuff.”

Dorion only moved into the GM’s role this year, but even when he served as assistant GM he did a good job retaining the players the organization wanted to keep. Since he took over, the club signed winger Mike Hoffman to an extension and last month it was winger Zack Smith.

After acquiring Condon from the Penguins in exchange for a 5th-round pick when the organization learned goaltender Craig Anderson would need personal leave to be with his wife Nicholle, the Senators have been pleased with the job he’s done in the net.

“It’s been a good opportunity to play on a great team here in a great system,” Condon said. “I love everybody. The management and the coaches are very transparent here. They communicate very well which, as a player, is very valuable. I like the city, I like the room and everybody has been very welcoming here.”
