This is a nonfiction book intended to help people through life-threatening situations, and I can really see where it would help those who are fearful--even full of terror. Terror of the pain, terror of leaving their loved ones (or a loved one leaving them), or terror of the unknown. This book is one that will enlighten and comfort.

There are times when death threatens or overcomes our loved ones, and everyone has a time when their own life will be left behind. When the latter comes suddenly, there's no time to become afraid--but when the physician come into our hospital room (or to the room in his/her office) and gives us a death sentence, it can be a time of real confusion and fear. I think it's probably worse when it's a loved one. Swallowed by Life is a 10-chapter book with thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter.

God doesn't want us to be afraid. He wants us to come to Him and know that He is able to care for us.

Available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Swallowed by Life by author Ada Brownwell is a transparent look at a mother's grief and search for faith after her daughter dies. It is extremely well written and will take readers on the heart wrenching journey with her.

Author Brownwell questioned God when she learned Carolyn, her daughter Carolyn, was going to die. She writes of the struggles and trials she faced. She explores her grief, anger, and depression. Brownwell talks to God to search for answers and her faith. Is there really life after death? Would she see her beloved daughter, Carolyn, again.

This book takes readers step by step with the author. Divided into ten chapters this paperback book begins with a dedication and preface before them. It ends with answers to study questions which conclude each chapter. Heavily sprinkled with scripture the chapters reinforce what it makes says that we are not alone and God is with us. It shows how we should be ready to leave this earth and live a life to encourage others.

I enjoyed this beautifully written book and would recommend it. It would be nice for someone grieving or struggling with faith. It would make a great small group study. I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy of this book was provided for my honest review from The Book Club Network.

The author is using her experience as a medical reporter for a daily newspaper to address an issue we will all have to deal with—death and what happens to us afterwards. She states in the preface that she will reveal how science shows us that death is swallowed by life every day and what Jesus had to say about eternal life. She also examines the evidence that we are more than just a mere body. Her exploration of these topics arose from trying to come to terms with the death of her daughter and the need for reassurance that all she had believed about heaven and life eternal was really true. As she states: “I’ve discovered life is a powerful force, and all life is supernatural because our Heavenly Father created it. In this book I will share the wonder of it all.”----and she does just that.

The book is made up of ten, very readable chapters filled with anecdotes and scientific tidbits. A set of discussion questions follows each chapter to help with book study groups or just personal reflection. The answers can be found at the end to be sure those questions are explored as the author intended. I enjoyed the images she uses to help paint word pictures of the natural processes of aging, death and new life: a restored rusty car, the collapsed roof of a deserted barn, leaves falling from a tree at different rates, the inside of a chicken egg, and others. I especially liked the following image: “When medicine leaves no handholds to grasp as we teeter on death’s precipice, we discover the Savior has gone this way before and will help.” Very comforting words.

This is a fascinating examination of the intricacies of the human body, a thorough Bible study of life after death, and the poignant reminisce of a mother who has lost a child and the peace she found. I highly recommend this book for anyone because, as the author says, there is no escaping our terminal condition.

I received a review copy of this book from the author, but the opionions expressed are solely mine.

I like to give good ratings on books but I found I just could not get through the second chapter. I just didn't care for the writing and the personal opinions. Sorry Miss Brownell.
