Building Health Check Formaldehyde Test Kit

The Formaldehyde Test Kit is a helpful do-it-yourself kit that detects the presence and concentration of formaldehyde in your indoor environment. This kit uses a device called a Bio-Badge to retrieve an air sample from an indoor area of up to 2,800 square feet over a 24- to 48-hour testing period.

Once the sample is retrieved, you will mail your sample to an independent lab--Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory--for analysis of its contents. You'll then receive detailed results on the formaldehyde concentration levels found in your sample, so you can take action to restore the health of your indoor space.

NOTE: Once the test kit has been opened and seal has been broken, it cannot be returned.

Why Test for Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a toxic colorless gas with a strong odor. Resins containing formaldehyde are commonly used to manufacture building materials and other common household products such as plywood, fabrics, smooth flooring, and carpeting. Health effects due to the exposure to formaldehyde include:

• Watery eyes
• Burning of the eyes, nose and throat
• Wheezing
• Skin rashes
• Coughing
• Aggravated asthma symptoms

These effects can result from both a high level of formaldehyde in the air or sensitivity to low levels of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is listed as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Formaldehyde Test Kit is an economical way to screen your home or workplace for exposure to this toxic pollutant. This kit is also ideal for evaluating formaldehyde levels in commercial establishments like hospitals, schools, hotels, airports, and more.

The Testing Procedure

The Formaldehyde Test Kit includes everything you need to complete the test. The kit uses a patented Bio-Badge sampling device to collect your sample. Step-by-step instructions included in the kit contain a detailed explanation of how to use the badge and retrieve the sample. Once testing begins, the badge should collect sample data for 24 to 48 hours (24 hours is preferable). You may either wear the Bio-Badge to test personal exposure, or you may place the badge in one location to measure room exposure. Lab test results are included in the price of the unit. 

Once sampling is complete, you'll mail your sample to Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory (EDL). A pre-addressed envelope is included in the kit. Your sample will be tested and a results report detailing the formaldehyde concentration levels found will be sent to you. While most customers receive their results via email within 3-5 business days (after your sample device is received by EDL), during busy times it can take more time.

Expert Results, Actionable Information

Your EDL analysis report will identify the concentration level of formaldehyde detected in the testing location. It will also include a summary of recommended actions based on your findings.
